Kia Attacks Light-Car Heavy Hitters

Kia says the team tested the Rio and its rivals for more than 5000 kilometres over a six-month period. Further evaluation took place at Kia’s Nam Yang research and development centre in South Korea.

Standard equipment highlights include Bluetooth with audio streaming, steering wheel controls, tilt- and reach-adjustable steering, rear spoiler, trip computer, power windows, a four-speaker audio system with USB/aux/iPod connectivity and body-coloured exterior mirrors and door handles.

Apart from the upgraded engine and availability of a six-speed automatic, the Rio Si adds cruise control, a six-speaker audio system, electric folding exterior mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, 16-inch alloy wheels and front foglights.

The SLi flagship is distinguished by 17-inch alloys with Continental ContiSport tyres, projector headlights, LED daytime-running lights and tail-lights, auto headlights and an enhanced brake package comprising larger-diameter front discs.

Safety equipment across all models includes six airbags and stability control. Kia Australia anticipates a maximum five-star ANCAP crash-test rating when the Rio is tested later this year.

Styled to “stand out in a crowded segment” the Rio was designed by Massimo Frascella (who also penned the Sportage SUV and Kia Ray concept) at the brand’s California design studio.

Kia Motors Australia president and chief executive M.K. Kim says the Rio is a crucial member of the Kia family. “As the car that introduced so many Australians to Kia, its role as an ambassador cannot be overstated.”

Kim says his company has “a car which is extremely attractive with a fresh feeling of sportiness”, adding it now plays in a market segment that is no longer female-skewed.
