Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

KOMPAS.com - Pronounced “Soopa lay jeera”, it means super-light and the chrome-on-brass name was attached to the bonnets of Sixties Aston Martins made in the time-honoured method of wrapping small cross-section steel tubes in hand-beaten aluminium coachwork, as exemplified by the work of Carrozzeria Touring of Milan.

When Touring ceased activity in 1966, most of its employees went to the Lamborghini coachwork specialist Carrozzeria Marazzi, so there’s a sort of authenticity in Lamborghini using the name even if its Gallardo Superleggera is built just like every other Gallardo, but has most of its trim replaced by carbon-fibre saving 154lb (70kg).

At 2,954lb (1,340kg) this is the lightest vehicle Lamborghini currently builds and its 5.2-litre V10 generates 562bhp, giving a top speed of 202mph and 0-60mph acceleration in 3.4sec. It goes on sale later this year.
